Twelve NFL teams kept starters out of the preseason — what it means

The practice of keeping primary quarterbacks off the field in August has reached a new peak. This preseason 12 NFL teams did not play their starting quarterbacks in any game, a mark that confirms the offseason trend toward protecting signal-callers from contact and reducing their live reps.

Scale and history of the shift

Teams have been progressively limiting starter snaps for years, but skipping preseason games entirely represents a clear break from older norms. In previous eras quarterbacks routinely played series in August to build timing with new personnel and to show coaches how their reads and progressions held up against live defences. The recent uptick in full absences follows several seasons in which teams already reduced starter participation; this year’s number — 12 teams — means more than a third of projected opening-day starters did not take a single snap before Week 1.

Why clubs are sitting them: key reasons

  • Injury prevention: Teams are prioritising availability, treating any contact in preseason as an unacceptable risk to a quarterback’s preparation for the regular season.
  • Practice control: Coaching staffs prefer to manage live reps in-house during training camp practices rather than in a game environment where control over situations is limited.
  • Playbook concealment: Starting quarterbacks stay out of games to reduce the chance of revealing new schemes or reads to opponents before meaningful weeks.
  • Guaranteed contracts: Some teams believe the roster and cap realities give them less incentive to showcase starters when contract guarantees or draft capital already fix their plans.
  • Backup evaluation: Coaches use preseason snaps to judge the depth chart and special-teams contributors instead of risking a starter.

Impact on backups and roster decisions

Absent starters, backup quarterbacks and younger prospects absorb many more live snaps. That provides meaningful game film for coaches deciding roster spots and practice-squad roles. It also means teams get a clearer read on which backups can handle pressure situations and which receivers or tight ends perform with a less-experienced passer. For players fighting for a roster spot, the increased responsibility is both an opportunity and a high-stakes audition; for franchises it produces usable evaluation data without exposing the primary signal-caller to injury risk.

Consequences for preparation and team chemistry

Not playing starters reduces the number of real-time reps a quarterback has with first-team passes and new personnel. That can slow timing with new receivers and limit the scouting staff’s ability to see how well a starter executes in game-speed reads. Teams attempting complex or heavily newised offences accept a trade-off: preserve the starter’s health at the cost of fewer live proofs of cohesion. Many clubs aim to replace those lost reps with scripted, high-intensity practices and controlled intra-squad scrimmages.

Fan experience, broadcast value and league considerations

Fans and broadcasters notice when starters sit. Preseason ticket sales and TV ratings have already been under pressure, and running out marquee names can further depress interest. The league balances this against long-term benefits of reduced injuries to star players. Rules and scheduling also influence behaviour: the modern regular-season roster structures, injury protections and the economics of large roster guarantees make the cost of starter injury, even in a meaningless August game, harder to accept.

Where this leaves the season opener

Teams that withheld starters enter Week 1 with cleaner injury reports for their top quarterbacks but potentially fewer live-game reps together. Opponents must prepare for starters whose in-season form will be judged more on recent practices and preseason backup film than on exhibition performances. For the broader league, the new normal likely means continued emphasis on protecting high-value players, more elaborate camp simulation work, and a reassessment of the preseason’s role as both a business product and a developmental stage.
