Top NBA free agents still on the board as 2026-27 rosters settle

Most teams have finished the heavy lifting of roster construction for 2026-27, but useful free agents are still on the market. The summer saw notable headline moves — LeBron James signing with the Philadelphia 76ers, Peyton Watson moving in a sign-and-trade from the Denver Nuggets to the Cleveland Cavaliers, and Jonathan Kuminga agreeing terms with the Minnesota Timberwolves — that fixed the cores of several contenders. Those deals lowered the urgency for many clubs, yet a group of experienced wings, perimeter shooters and backup playmakers remain available and could be decisive for teams that stumble early or need injury cover.

Why some players stayed unsigned

The market this offseason was shaped by a handful of factors that left quality players waiting. First, salary-cap pressure: many clubs used their remaining space to finish deals around their core starters and to avoid long-term luxury-tax commitments. Second, fit matters more than ever. Teams prioritised players who match specific defensive systems, switching schemes, or play alongside a primary ball-handler, which narrowed the number of viable landing spots for several free agents. Third, age and role expectations reduced demand for multi-year contracts; many contenders preferred short-term, low-risk additions rather than three-year deals for perimeter veterans.

Those dynamics produced a two-speed market. Top-tier stars found teams willing to build around them, while the mid-tier pool — players who can start occasionally or provide 15–25 minutes of reliable production — waited for the right offer. That opens opportunities for teams that missed on headline targets or that want flexible depth. With training camps approaching, those clubs will revisit the available list, often pushing contracts that offer a low first-year cap hit and easy roster flexibility.

Notable free agents still available

  • Veteran wing: A seasoned two-way forward remains unsigned and offers reliable perimeter defence and spot-up shooting that fringe contenders prize.
  • Perimeter shooter: A switchable guard shooter is free and fills the league-wide shortage of players who can consistently space the floor from deep.
  • Backup playmaker: A ball-handling guard with starting experience is available and suits teams that want insurance behind their lead guards.
  • Energy big: A mobile frontcourt defender is unsigned and brings rebounding and short-burst rim protection in limited minutes.
  • Two-way wing: A younger wing on a prove-it track remains on the market and could earn minutes if given a structured role.

Each of these profile types fits a clear need for playoff teams that lost wing defenders or shooters, and for rebuilding clubs that need veterans to shepherd young rotation players. Contracts for remaining players will likely be short and team-friendly; most signings now are structured to preserve a clubs ability to react during the season.

How remaining signings could shift competitive balance

Even late additions matter. Contenders that add a reliable perimeter shooter or a defensive wing can improve their second-unit defence and three-point spacing, which translates directly into better playoff matchups. For example, teams that face series against isolation-heavy backcourts prize guards who can switch and contest without sacrificing spacing. Similarly, a dependable backup point guard changes late-game rotations, allowing coaches to rest starters without collapsing offence or defence.

On the other hand, rebuilding teams can use remaining veterans as short-term mentors. Those veterans provide situational leadership and stabilise rookie minutes, which accelerates player development and reduces the cost of inexperience during the regular season. The money for these signings is usually modest; that makes late-market additions one of the few ways clubs can cheaply improve both on-court performance and locker-room culture.

What to watch before training camp

Expect two waves of movement before teams open camps. The first will be conservative: teams with small roster holes will sign specialists to one-year deals. The second wave will follow early injuries or underperformance. Trackable indicators to watch are roster non-guaranteed windows, which allow franchises to invite players to camp and decide in October, and injury reports from key teams that need urgent cover.

For front offices, timing and fit are now the deciding factors. A well-timed one-year signing could become a playoff rotation piece. For players, staying ready and accepting short guarantees is the pragmatic route back into the league. The market is quieter than in summer trade cycles, but it remains dynamic; the remaining free agents will determine the depth and balance of rosters once the season begins.
