How Zach Allen became a defensive anchor after starting alongside J.J. Watt

From prospect to starter

Zach Allen arrived in the NFL seen as a player with potential rather than a finished product. Early in his career he shared a dressing room and a defensive front with J.J. Watt, a presence whose standards and work ethic set a high bar. Allen did not become an overnight star. He worked through technique, strength and situational awareness. Over successive seasons he shifted from rotational snaps and developmental assignments to a role where he is expected on every down. The transition is clear in how coaches deploy him: fewer surprise substitutions and more responsibility in run fits, pass-rush schemes and late-game situations.

Mentorship and the lessons from Watt

The early overlap with Watt gave Allen a blueprint for elite play without stealing his voice. Watt’s influence was chiefly procedural: the habits of preparation, the attention to film and the relentless pursuit of marginal gains. Allen translated that template into his own approach rather than attempting to replicate Watt’s signature moves. That mattered because the teams and defensive calls Allen now faces require a different mix of skills. Where Watt built a reputation as a dominant interior pass rusher and a disruptive force, Allen has broadened his toolbox to include stout gap control and consistent run defence, plus enough pass-rush variety to keep tackles guessing.

Traits that define Allen

  • Technique focus: Allen has refined hand use and leverage so he can finish plays without relying only on speed or power.
  • Versatility on snaps: He now plays multiple alignments, which lets defensive coordinators disguise pressure without rotating personnel.
  • Football IQ: Allen reads blocking schemes more quickly and diagnoses plays earlier, improving his timing on counters and stunts.
  • Durability and conditioning: He keeps consistent snaps across a game, making him reliable late in close contests.

Role in Denver’s front

As the Broncos defensive lineman who has grown into a primary piece, Allen anchors more than one phase of the defence. The coaching staff now turns to him when they need a dependable interior presence against heavy fronts and third-and-short looks. His responsibility includes setting the edge on inside runs, generating interior push that collapses pocket lanes for outside rushers, and absorbing double teams so linebackers can flow cleanly. That level of trust means Allen is often included in communicated game plans rather than inserted as a situational chess piece.

What his presence changes against the Cardinals

Returning to play the Cardinals carries a narrative element — a player facing his original franchise — but the practical implications are tactical. Allen’s ability to occupy blockers and time his pass-rush gives the Broncos options in coverage and blitz strategy. Offenses facing him must allocate attention up front: either slide protection to negate his quickness or chip with a back to limit his ability to finish. Both choices create stress elsewhere on the field, and Denver’s defensive coaches design schemes to force those choices and then exploit them. For Arizona, that means planning additional protections or quicker throws, which can limit a passing game’s route development and rhythm.

Leadership beyond the stat sheet

Allen’s value to the locker room extends beyond measurable plays. Progressing from a supporting role into a centerpiece has shifted his responsibilities off the field. Younger linemen in Denver look to his preparation habits in meetings and on the practice turf. That influence shows up in fewer blown assignments and more consistent defensive gap integrity on running downs. Leadership for Allen is less about words and more about setting the standard: arriving prepared, finishing reps with intent and accepting the grunt work that allows splash plays from teammates.

Outlook and expectations

The arc from a developing player alongside J.J. Watt to a mainstay of the Broncos’ rotation marks a sustained improvement rather than a single breakout. Allen’s continued impact will depend on maintaining technical growth and avoiding the injury setbacks that can disrupt continuity. If he keeps evolving his hand work and reads while staying on the field, he projects as a player opposing coordinators must plan for in every game plan. That planning pressure is itself a valuable outcome — one that has turned Allen from a promising sidekick into a central figure in Denver’s defensive architecture.
