In an epic showdown on Sunday, Novak Djokovic etched his name in the annals of tennis history by securing his fourth US Open title and clinching his 24th Grand Slam championship. The Serbian sensation demonstrated his unmatched prowess with a commanding straight-sets victory over Daniil Medvedev, an achievement that further solidified his status as a tennis legend.

A Record-Equalling Triumph

Djokovic’s 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory against Medvedev not only marked his fourth conquest on the grand stage of New York but also propelled him into the ranks of history as the oldest US Open champion in the Open Era. At 36 years old, Djokovic displayed unwavering determination and skill that have become his trademark throughout his illustrious career.

A Remarkable Year for Djokovic

For Djokovic, this victory constituted his third Grand Slam title of the year, following his triumphs at the Australian Open and the French Open. His only setback came in a thrilling five-set clash with Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final, making his resurgence at the US Open all the more impressive.

Tribute to a Legend: Kobe Bryant

In a touching and symbolic gesture, Djokovic donned a tracksuit top adorned with the number 24 and ‘Mamba Forever,’ paying homage to the late NBA star Kobe Bryant, who wore the same jersey number during his storied career. Djokovic shared,

“I thought of doing this T-shirt, eventually, if I get the chance to win the tournament. Kobe was a close friend, we chatted a lot about the winner’s mentality. When I was struggling with injury, he was one of the people I relied on the most.”

The Medvedev Challenge

Djokovic’s opponent, Daniil Medvedev, had previously thwarted his quest for a calendar Grand Slam in the 2021 US Open final, where the Russian emerged victorious. This rematch at Arthur Ashe Stadium was laden with historical significance, as Djokovic sought to overcome his formidable adversary and claim his rightful place in the tennis pantheon.
