Ravens Introduce ‘Triple-Threat’ Malik Cunningham: A Game-Changer for Playoff Aspirations?

As reported by multiple sources, the Baltimore Ravens have set the stage for an electrifying addition to their roster by securing rookie quarterback Malik Cunningham from the New England Patriots practice squad. This move fortifies their quarterback depth and reunites Cunningham with his former Louisville teammate and current Ravens star, Lamar Jackson, igniting anticipation about the dynamic possibilities this union might bring.

Who exactly is Malik Cunningham?

After the NFL Draft in April, Cunningham emerged as an undrafted free agent talent, swiftly landing a spot with the New England Patriots. The Patriots’ eagerness to secure Cunningham was evident in their historic investment, offering him the most considerable guaranteed sum for an undrafted free agent in franchise history, a staggering $200,000.

Malik Cunningham, prominently known for his time at Louisville, showcased his prowess as a dual-threat quarterback. However, what sets him apart now is the prospect of evolving into a rare triple-threat quarterback, a rarity in today’s NFL landscape.

While quarterbacks who exhibit both throwing and running capabilities aren’t uncommon, those who seamlessly add the dimension of catching to their repertoire are a rare breed. An ESPN report revealed that Taysom Hill of the New Orleans Saints is a prominent example, being the sole player in the previous season to manage double-digit snaps as both a quarterback and a wide receiver.

Yet, a new contender seems to be emerging in the league – Malik Cunningham.

Cunningham’s collegiate journey at Louisville showcased his multifaceted talent. He demonstrated impressive passing skills, amassing 9,964 yards and 70 touchdowns across 56 games from 2018 to 2022, and also exhibited remarkable running abilities, accumulating 3,182 yards on 619 carries, averaging 5.1 yards per carry.

Reports from ESPN in August indicated Cunningham’s potential to serve as a Hill-type option for the Patriots. His preseason stint leading the New England offense was notably impactful, especially after the team faced challenges establishing offensive momentum.

Louisville’s offensive coordinator, Lance Taylor, echoed Cunningham’s uniqueness, highlighting his capability to transform a seemingly negative play into a game-changing move, a rare quality, especially in a quarterback. ESPN’s insights revealed that only three players in the last 15 years have managed to feature significantly both as a quarterback and a receiver in a single season – Hill being one of them. Could Cunningham be poised to become the fourth?

The prospect of Cunningham’s arrival in the Ravens’ fold heralds a potential game-changer, adding a versatile and dynamic talent to their arsenal. With Cunningham’s multifaceted skill set, the Ravens might be on the cusp of unlocking a new dimension in their offensive strategy, possibly elevating their playoff aspirations to new heights.
