In a ceremony celebrating excellence and leadership in Major League Baseball (MLB), Brandon Hyde of the Baltimore Orioles was named the American League (AL) Manager of the Year. At the same time, Skip Schumaker of the Miami Marlins earned the National League (NL) honor. MLB made The announcement on Tuesday, recognizing the outstanding contributions of these managers to their respective teams during the 2023 season.
Brandon Hyde’s Triumph with the Baltimore Orioles
Hyde’s remarkable achievement comes after steering the Orioles to an impressive regular season, securing 101 wins—the second-highest across all 30 MLB teams. This marked a significant milestone for the Orioles, marking their first 100+ win season since 1980. Under Hyde’s leadership, the team returned to the playoffs after a seven-year absence. Although they faced a defeat in the AL Division Series against the Texas Rangers, Hyde expressed immense pride in the organization’s progress over the last two years.
“I’m super proud of our organization and how far we’ve come, exceeding expectations the last two years,” Hyde remarked. “It’s been quite a journey and a long road, but I’m super happy to be a Baltimore Oriole and how far we’ve come in five years.”
Skip Schumaker’s Impact on the Miami Marlins
Unlike Hyde, who has been at the helm of the Orioles for five seasons, Schumaker assumed the managerial role for the Marlins in October 2022. In his debut season with the team, Schumaker orchestrated a remarkable improvement in their record, elevating it from 69-93 to an impressive 84-78. Additionally, he guided the Marlins back to the playoffs for the first time since 2020, marking only the team’s second postseason appearance in two decades.
Although the Marlins faced a setback in the NL Wild Card Series against the Philadelphia Phillies, Schumaker’s influence during the regular season did not go unnoticed. The Manager of the Year voting strictly considered regular-season results, and Schumaker’s impact on changing the culture within the Marlins’ clubhouse was evident.
“I think we set a new standard in that clubhouse, and now it’s time to protect the standard,” Schumaker stated. “After you get a taste of that postseason, you just want to get back there any way you can, and that’s the next step for our organization.”
Both Hyde and Schumaker join the ranks of esteemed MLB managers, celebrated for their leadership, strategic understanding, and the positive transformation they brought to their respective teams during the 2023 season.
