Teddy Atlas Expresses Concern for Boxer’s Health Amid Planned Fight

As the anticipation for a potential rematch between Errol Spence Jr and Terence Crawford builds, the boxing world is abuzz with expectations of an electrifying showdown. However, former Hall of Fame trainer Teddy Atlas has raised a significant red flag, expressing deep concern for the health of Errol Spence Jr if this fight goes ahead.

Earlier this month, it was announced that Errol Spence Jr had invoked a contractual rematch clause to secure another bout with Terence Crawford. Their first encounter ended with Crawford dominating Spence and stopping him in nine rounds to claim the undisputed welterweight world championship on July 29.

While many in the boxing community believe that Spence’s move to a higher weight class, specifically super welterweight, might improve his chances against Crawford, Teddy Atlas sees it differently.

During an appearance on ProBoxTV, Teddy Atlas shared his reservations about the rematch and the potential risks involved for Errol Spence Jr. He expressed his deep concern for Spence’s well-being after the brutal beating he endured in their first bout.

“I’m not over dramatizing this. He took such a brutal beating that I don’t know how you talk about a rematch; I really don’t. Spence has been a tremendous fighter and was a tremendous champion. But after that beating, I don’t want to see a rematch. I don’t care if it’s at 154lbs, what is that going to change? That he gets hit with more weight behind it. I don’t see it changing anything. I’m more concerned about his health. I know they’re good people behind Spence, but this is something they need to rethink. Give him the rest that he needs.”

Despite initial indications that Crawford might entertain the idea of fighting at 154lbs in a rematch, it appears that the weight issue could be more problematic than anticipated. Crawford, as the winner of the first encounter, holds the power to dictate the terms of the rematch. However, recent reports suggest that he may be more inclined to pursue a super fight against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez rather than face Spence again.

As the boxing world eagerly awaits the final decision on the rematch, the concerns raised by Teddy Atlas regarding Errol Spence Jr’s health cast a shadow over the potential bout. In a sport known for its grueling physical demands, the safety and well-being of the fighters should always be at the forefront of any decision-making process.
